Operation Leopard
In May of 1978, a group of communist guerillas coming from the neighboring country of Angola launched an assault on the mining town of Kolwezi, which was located in Katanga, Zaire (now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, formerly known as the Belgian Congo). Both the Europeans who work for the Belgian mining business and the Africans who dwell in the town are seized as prisoners by the invaders, who then begin a bloodbath by murdering both the Africans and the Europeans who have been kidnapped as hostages. Due to the fact that a significant number of the Europeans were French, the French government made the decision to plan a counter-attack and to dispatch a Paratrooper Regiment from the Foreign Legion. The film follows the stories of a number of characters, including Delbart, a former non-commissioned officer who was about to go back to France with his African wife and child, Damrémont, who was Delbart's replacement, Bia, a Zairian doctor, and Annie, an American who is married to a Belgian engineer, as well as Federico, a non-com Legion officer, as well as the French Ambassador and the Military Attaché.
