The Silence Before Bach
This new movie from the eccentric and experimental Catalan director Portabella is a beautiful, sometimes slightly crazy celebration and reflection on the role Bach's music plays in the world today. The film is a playful, painterly series of variations on the idea that Johann Sebastian's extraordinary ear for harmony changed the way people hear all over the world. It does this by mixing historical reconstruction with "dramatic" scenes and documentary scenes that are only loosely connected to each other.
