The Heartbreak Kid
She is a school teacher from a well-to-do Greek-Australian family who is happily married to a lawyer and pleased with the typical course of her life. She begins teaching at a working-class elementary school in the inner city, where she finds that her ideals are being challenged by the pupils and teachers there. When Christina becomes involved in a campaign to organize an all-girl soccer club at a school where the racist PE teacher only supports Australian Rules Football, she begins to fall in love with Nick, a 17-year-old soccer player who is also a member of the campaign's leadership team (Alex Dimitriades). Christina is forced to examine herself, her family, and the culture in which she lives as a result of the subsequent affair. An intelligently written script that successfully blends humour with a thought-provoking assessment of contemporary ethnic relationships in Australia, and which is brilliantly performed by a young ensemble, manages to be both entertaining and thought-provoking.
