Mighty Jerome
Harry Jerome was only nineteen years old when he became Canada's most promising track and field athlete in1959, and he was on his way to the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome. By1962, he had every reason to believe that his racing days were finished after sustaining a horrific leg injury in a motorcycle accident. Jerome, on the other hand, was not just a champion on the track; he was also a champion off the track. This marked the beginning of his ascent to what his renowned coach, Bill Bowerman, referred to as "the greatest comeback in track and field history." Even as the world watched, Harry Jerome kept his head down and ran. He demonstrated a strength of character and willful perseverance that were every bit as impressive as his world-beating athleticism. Harry Jerome was born in a time of unprecedented political turbulence, personal challenge, and racial conflict.
